Music for Good Friday

Friday, 3 April 2026
About this event
Originally a day of quiet reflection, Good Friday now feels little different to all other days of the year. As an antidote to all the hustle and bustle, vocal ensemble Collegium directed by Mark Duley will perform Heinrich Schütz’ setting of the St Matthew Passion.
In recent years audiences for this event have grown. It appears that many people, both believers and non-believers, appreciate this space for contemplation. This year’s programme is sure to facilitate that once again. Heinrich Schütz wrote three settings of the Passions (the Gospels of Christ’s death) towards the end of his life. The Matthäus-Passion is written for choir and ten soloists, including the major roles of Evangelist and Jesus.
